Why “Winter” Triathlon Championship is held in spring?

20 March 2017

When arranging Winter Triathlon Championship our federation team many times faced a question “Why “winter” championship is held in spring?”

We decided to clarify this interesting fact.

There is no mistake in the name. Surely, in some cities, especially in North Kazakhstan region, March can be designated as a winter month. Indeed, reason for the name “winter” partly relates to weather conditions. But first things first.

The matter is that a multisport race involves the completion of three disciplines: swimming, cycling and running.

Sequence of disciplines is not random in nature – it is noteworthy that at the beginning of triathlon development as a separate sport the swimming was a finishing segment. Athletes tired from cycling and running were supposed to have a rest in water. But with the increase in the number of athletes taking part in competitions, the number of hazardous events had also greatly increased. Having tired after running and cycling, the athletes suffered from muscle cramps. It was therefore agreed to change the sequence and put the swimming first.

“Winter” competitions imply that one or all disciplines are held indoor due to not suitable weather conditions.

In championship that will be held on March 26 in Shymkent the stages are divided into two parts:

Swimming in indoor pool from 9:00

Cycling and running at 2:00 p.m.

Thus, considering the weather conditions, athletes will have a time to change a uniform for the following stage.

Regarding the weather, - the weather forecasters promise about +15 degrees in the day of competitions. We will be happy to see you among our guests or participants.
